"The Duke" was the first horse to win the Liverpool Steeplechase in 1836. The race became known as The Grand National in 1839. The race was run on February 29, 1836, and he was ridden by Captain Beecher who gave his name to the famous jump "Beecher's Brook." "The Duke" was owned by a Mr. Sirdefield and won the race again the following year.
